Centerbacks

Not much to talk about here. A part of me is still nagging that Unai Emery may opt for the back three set-up, but the overwhelming voice in my head (of which there are many) is saying back four, so that’s what we are going to predict – a back four, sans Sokratis, post-meltdown. Of course, missing Sokratis is going to be a blow, but in an attack-oriented set-up, the primary objective of these defenders will be to match the athleticism of any counter-attack from Rennes.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

Which actually puts Shkodran Mustafi in a better light than he would normally be in, because if there is one thing he has, it’s athleticism. So count him as a starter by default, seeing as how there really aren’t any other options.

Laurent Koscielny will ideally start next to him, depending on his health. Thankfully, we have an extended lay-off after this match for all bruises to mend, but that still means that Koscielny has to get through 90 minutes in this one, or at least long enough to see this game to a point that it can’t fall through.

The only other option would be to get Nacho Monreal or Stephan Lichtsteiner some time at centerback, but if that doesn’t tickle your fancy, you’re not alone.

On to the fullbacks.
