4. Aubameyang and his nose for goal

If you were to watch the replay of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s opening goal from over the shoulder of Ben Foster, you would see a centre-forward haring down on a poor touch from the goalkeeper, sniffing the opportunity to snatch a goal. This was a man who could sense a mistake, and he was keen to take advantage.

It would be easy to discredit Aubameyang’s goal as a mere rebound, but that would be bely both the anticipation and desire to pressure Foster into a mistake and then lunge his leg in front of the misplace clearance and block the ball into the gaping net. Aubameyang deserves great recognition for his work.

And this is the sign of a centre-forward who knows how to score goals. He just has a nose for goal. It is difficult to describe with any more clarity than that. Aubameyang may have other shortcomings as a lone centre-forward, but he sure understands how to score goals, and that is the most valuable skill in the game.
