Arsenal: If Alexandre Lacazette could be happier, so could we
By Josh Sippie
Arsenal have a shoo-in for player of the season: Alexande Lacazette. And yet he says he could be happier with how the season’s went. Which means we could too.
The only player who is mounting any sort of threat to Alexandre Lacazette‘s shoo-in to Arsenal‘s Player of the Season is Laurent Koscielny. But it doesn’t seem right to give it to a guy that’s been here half the year when the other guy has been an anchor for the entire year.
Lacazette was a hero yet again against Napoli. After getting fouled en route to the goal, he proceeded to snap a free kick into the back of the net from 25, 30 yards, to put the tie to bed before it could start to stress out the fans.
This isn’t a new thing. Lacazette is a clutch player who is learning to perform best when under pressure, and that doesn’t just mean scoring goals, as has always been the case with him. It means being able to build an attack.
Lacazette’s been fantastic this year, and he’s only gotten better, which is how he finds himself in the position of being the clear choice for Player of the Season. And yet, when asked how this he is doing, Lacazette expressed his joy at what he does, but mentioned that he could be even happier.

Of course, some people may be spinning this as a bad thing. That he isn’t happy at North London. But I don’t see it that way (and thus, neither should you). I see it as a matter of him feeling he could do even better with his performances on the pitch.
Which is to say that if Lacazette could be even happier, than you’re damn right we can be even happier as fans too.
Lacazette is the ninth highest scorer in the Premier League, and five whole goals behind strike mate Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, and I wonder if he wants to be scoring more goals. I mean… of course he does, he’s a striker. But that could be his “could be happier” criteria.
Which obviously only means good things for the future, because he isn’t settling for where he is now. He wants more. And as a rule of thumb, if the players don’t want more, the team generally won’t find more.
I want Lacazette to be happy, but I’m also selfishly happy that he isn’t happy yet. Arsenal need to reach for bigger things, and Lacazette can help us get there.
