Arsenal: This is exactly why we got Denis Suarez, isn’t it?
By Josh Sippie
Denis Suare is still injured for Arsenal, but after seeing that Wolverhampton nonsense, it’s safe to say that that’s exactly why we loaned him.
It’s been awhile since I’ve been able to talk about Denis Suarez, who had become a muse of mine as I was constantly jabbering about how Arsenal got him for a reason, and if we didn’t let him try to be that reason, then what was the point, yada yada yada.
In case you forgot, we brought in Denis Suarez because we were having trouble creating chances. Like, major troubles. This is when Henrikh Mkhitaryan was hurt, Aaron Ramsey was still out of the picture a bit and Mesut Ozil was only used in the safety of push-over home matches. Meaning that it was Alex Iwobi and…. Sead Kolasinac who were creating the chances.
Thus we got Denis Suarez. And as soon as he arrived, Aaron Ramsey came back into the team and performed fantastically, Mesut Ozil started staking his claim and Mkhitaryan got back into his best form. Suarez was pointless.
He disappeared, somehow got hurt, and everyone was resigned to sending him back to Barcelona when the season was up. Why keep a guy who had proven absolutely nothing in his time at the club?

And then Wolverhampton happened. Among all the other things that failed against Wolverhampton, the creative engine failed magnificently. I’m actually impressed that they were able to perform that badly.
Unai Emery sent out Alex Iwobi, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Mesut Ozil, his three main guys, and they accumulated two chances created between the lot of them. Granit Xhaka had more all by himself, and that’s not even his primary job.
It feels a lot like in January, when chances were so hard to come by, which prompted us to get Suarez in the first place. Matches like Wolverhampton are why we got him. When all else fails, who do we turn to?
Not just that, but Suarez would still be new enough that this disease of dejection wouldn’t have afflicted him yet. Plus he has that desire to prove himself, at least I hope he does, and who else has that? Certainly not Ozil or Mkhitaryan. Maybe Iwobi, I never know with him.
We tried to fix this problem once and it failed. Hopefully when we try to fix it again this summer, it can succeed. Although I doubt if it will involve Denis Suarez.
