Arsenal’s youth system hasn’t been what it’s needed to be in recent years, but in order to reverse that trend, they’re going to have to set an example.

If there is one thing that stresses every Arsenal fan out, it’s Stan Kroenke, and the ambiguous stranglehold he has on the transfer funds. We never know how much our team is allowed to spend, or if there is a limit at all, but all we know is we don’t spend as much as our closest competitors.

The easiest way to alleviate that stress isn’t to moan about Kroenke and his tight-fistedness, but rather to build out the farm system and develop it into the robust force that it has been in years past.

As it stands, the Gunners have a tremendous crop of young talent coming up through the system, but they’ve already suffered dents to that crop, losing the likes of Marcus McGuane and Stephy Mavididi simply because the opportunity wasn’t there.

Players like Reiss Nelson, Emile Smith Rowe and Joe Willock could be next out the door if they don’t start seeing some serious consideration and, beyond that, then next line of young players.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

Currently, the club are reportedly in talks to lock Tyreece John-Jules and Xavier Amaechi down to some serious contracts, and that is awesome to hear. Amaechi has already attracted attention from the likes of Bayern Munich, and John-Jules has been making headlines at the England youth levels.

It’s a big time for the Gunners, convincing these young men to stay and, hopefully, be a part of the next generation of Arsenal Football Club.

But in order to convince them to stay, they are going to have to see some sort of consideration, as mentioned, for the youth ranks.

That means players like Smith Rowe and Nelson have to start making more first team appearances as an example to future youth players that those that perform get opportunities in the first team. Otherwise it’s going to turn into another epidemic of young players leaving long before we can even truly see them play simply because there is nowhere for them to go.

That means that next season is vital to getting youth more chances, which is hard to wrap our heads around, because we also need to make some key purchases in the summer window, so the balancing act falls on Unai Emery to fill the gaps tight enough that we can be more competitive, but lose enough that youth still has a chance.
