Arsenal suffered utter humiliation at the hands of Chelsea in Wednesday’s Europa League final. Here is the fans’ reaction, and it’s not pretty.

Arsenal did what Arsenal do best: offer hope and then snatch it away from you. In one of their worst performances in the recent history of the club, the Gunners managed to largely control the first half of Wednesday’s Europa League final against Chelsea before completely capitulating after the break.

Eden Hazard scored twice in a scintillating final performance in a Chelsea shirt. Olivier Giroud came back to haunt his former club, opening the scoring with an excellent header from Emerson’s low cross. Pedro also notched a goal, converting Hazard’s neat square pass.

For Arsenal, it was more of the same. Lapse defending, lacking application, and major questions for the players, the manager, and the owners, with the club losing its fourth successive European final.

Predictably, the fans were not happy with Unai Emery’s side’s performance:

The blame was freely handed out. For some, this result cast doubt on Emery and his coaching ability:

For others, the defending was the issue:

But for most, there was one clear culprit to shoulder the blame. Yes, you guessed it. Mesut Ozil.

I will give the first word to James Benge of football.london, who neatly contrasted the German to Eden Hazard’s performance:

The fans were not much more pleasant about the midfielder’s display either:

And then, predictably, the discussion turned to what it always does with Mesut Ozil: money. His £350,00-a-week wages shape the conversation surrounding his role in the team and certainly cast a negative light on the positives that he brings:

The final led to some predicting the end of Ozil in north London this summer, with rumours that the club is looking to offload him for whatever they can get in return:

Ozil is obviously not totally to blame. Neither is Unai Emery, or even the defending, for that matter. The ineptitude of the performance stems from many different sources, these just being three examples. The saviours of the season, Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, were not precisely shining lights.

This was a humiliation, there are no two ways about it. And the Arsenal fans are keen to let their club know, as they rightly should.
