20. Shkodran Mustafi

I honestly hate that we have to rank him so low, and maybe I was even a bit too generous in my ranking because of it, but there’s just no hiding from it. Shkodran Mustafi has an insane amount of athletic and physical ability. He wins aerial duels despite being shorter. He has far better speed than he gets credit for.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

His passing sparkles unexpectedly at times and he remains one of our premier goal threats from set pieces.

But the mental mistakes have never gone away. They’ve never decreased. If anything, they’ve increased, as he continues to have lapses in concentration that result in penalties, defensive errors leading to goals, or just general buffoonery that no top-tier defender should be partaking in.

Whatever positivity we felt when he first arrived at the club and went 19 matches undefeated has to be gone now. The money that we spent on him was not a sound investment and now we have to deal with the consequences and try to find a decent enough transfer fee going the opposite way.

He’s a likable guy with tremendous ability, so I hope that he does find his success somewhere outside of England.
