Arsenal: I hope Unai Emery has his calculator ready
By Josh Sippie
Arsenal’s summer transfer window is going to be intricate, and it’s going to require some kind of dedication to get everything done that needs it.
I feel like I’ve said this before, but I couldn’t have meant it any more than I mean it now – this transfer window is going to be Arsenal‘s most important ever. And, if done properly, it is going to be one hell of a work of art.
From what we understand, there will only be £40m in additional funds allotted to this club. Which is atrocious, yes, but it’s where we are. That doesn’t include sales, of which there will be a ton.
So this is what Unai Emery has to think about – he has to be open-minded to upgrades at every single position while balancing the income from sales with the outgoing funds to bring in more sensible options.
For instance, let’s say that Emery wants to sell Sead Kolasinac, and can get £20m for him, which he should be able to, then with the shortage already present at left back, we have to think that that £20m, with a small chunk from the additional funds, has to be able to cover a complete overhaul of the position.

Because every single sale has to be answered. It would be hard to sell Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Mesut Ozil for £35m combined and apply those funds to fixing our problem at leftback, because we need those funds to help fix our problem where Mkhitaryan and Ozil were unable to help – in the creative midfield.
Each and every position has the potential to see moving pieces this summer, and barring any solutions from the youth ranks that are sure-fire bets, those moving pieces require investment that can match or improve the state of the club in that position.
With the club on the brink of selling upwards of 5-10 players, that is going to require so much management and it’s stressing me out thinking about it. No sale can go unanswered and no purchase can break the bank. Yet each position needs help.
Unai Emery and the transfer brain here at the club have been talking to a lot of the right types of players, but getting the green light on a deal is a different story, and it’s going to require one of the most tight-wire transfer windows we may ever see in order to pull off.
