Nacho Monreal – 5.25

This might have been the beginning of the end for Nacho Monreal. A superb servant of the club for many years, the Spaniard’s body started to get the better of him. As he was never a defender who relied on speed or athletic traits, the sharpness of his mind had kept him ahead of the game. But this season, his depreciating explosiveness seemed too much to overcome.

There were some nice performances littered in there, but most of these came at left centre-back, not the traditional full-back position that he has played for much of his career. There were also an increasing number of niggling injuries. He played in only 22 league matches, just three more than Bellerin who missed half the year.

Monreal may stay another season, but it will be nothing more than in a reserve role. The fact that Emery is actively looking for a new left-back tells you everything you need to know.
