Unai Emery is supposedly ‘under pressure’ to offload Mesut Ozil, and he should be. It’s the most important task for Arsenal this summer.

There are a lot of tasks for Unai Emery and the Arsenal transfer overlords to accomplish this year. They have to fix this defense, they have to populate the wings, they have to figure out the fullback situation and, most importantly, they have to clear out the dead weight.

And there is a lot of it. But the chief of the dead weight is Mesut Ozil, who has become such a burden to this club that selling him has to be regarded as the No. 1 task that this club has to accomplish in order for the transfer window to be successful.

Honestly, even if they load up on defenders, bolster the attack with wingers and a couple creative minds, if they don’t sell Mesut Ozil, I’ll be one of many saying, “yeah, that’s all great, but we really need to get rid of Mesut Ozil.”

It’s not about the money he will fetch. Because honestly, we shouldn’t be expecting him to fetch that much. That doesn’t matter though. I’m not being facetious when I say that if he fetches £0m, I’ll still call it a win.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

It’s not even about the wages he will free up, though that is a contributing factor. Rumor has it we have have to swallow some of his wages in order to offload him, but even if we end up paying half his wages, guess what? It’s still a win.

This has everything to do with the distraction he became last year. When he wasn’t playing, it was the talk of the town. He and Unai Emery were “at odds” and there was no future for the two of them together.

When he was playing, he was the talk of the town because he wasn’t producing. It was all bad. All.

What happens if Ozil stays with us next year? Does Unai Emery feel obligated to try to get some kind of production out of him, all the while knowing how unlikely it is? Or does he just sit there, frowning, all season long?

Whatever the case, it isn’t a good look for the team. He’s like the anchor holding down the ship, and he’s not doing himself any favors either. He’s too good of a player to live in such a negative light.
