Arsenal: Kieran Tierney just another one, or the trend breaker?

Arsenal are doing their best to inch into a move for Kieran Tierney, but might he just be another target that gets lowballed into obscurity, or does he change the game?

Arsenal have already had a £15m bid for Kieran Tierney rejected. The Celtic leftback is definitely a top target of the Gunners, who could stand to gain immensely with an investment into the right leftback, and if they play their cards right this summer, they could have a defense set for the longterm.

But that £15m was far too low. Celtic have him valued at £25m. But this isn’t the first time the Gunners have been caught lowballing an offer.

In case you missed my previous recap, this same tactic has failed to land us: Yannick Carrasco, Joachim Andersen, Dennis Praet, Ryan Fraser, William Saliba and Hakim Ziyech. And I’m sure I’m missing a few there.

Based on that lowball bid for Tierney, it doesn’t look like Tierney is going to be any different from the others. Even with the most recent report that the Gunners have submitted a second bid. Good news right?

More from Pain in the Arsenal

Just as good as the second bid we submitted for the Samprodia duo, Andersen and Praet… or the third one.

According to that same report, this second bid is still “far below” the £25m valuation. Now, here is where I get confused. £15m is certainly “far below” Celtic’s valuation of him. I don’t know how that second bid could be well below unless it’s like… £16m. Even if we upped our bid to £20m, that would be a modest effort, and right in line with what we’ve done in the past, upping bids £5m at a time and stalling out when we’re precisely £5m from the valuation of the club which may or may not change if we did meet the price asked for.

So what we have to ask ourselves is what makes Kieran Tierney different, if anything. Why is this pursuit any different than Yannick Carrasco, who we also lowballed for? (Other than the fact that Tierney won’t be suspended by Celtic.)

Chances are, he’s no different. At least not yet. Not until July 1st, when the Adidas deal goes through and we have actual money to spend that can account for al those extra £5m’s that are proving too much to handle. I would love to see this one break the trend, but it’s taking on the exact same shape.
