Arsenal’s new technical director Edu is bringing some names to the table, but they have one thing in common. What else you got, man?!

Arsenal needed two things to happen this summer before they could really start making a dent in their transfer needs. We needed that Adidas deal to go through, to spot us the money that we needed to make the signings in the first place. And we needed Edu to finish up the Copa America so he could join us and take over his role of the man in charge of the transfers.

Those have both happened, but it’s still slow going, with the same links and the same failures. Some are hypothesizing that Edu won’t even really be able to make an impact this summer because he won’t have time to congregate with Unai Emery and the rest of the brain trust to figure out a way forward.

Not sure I buy that, but regardless, we are seeing Edu’s hand already. His appointment has been lauded because of the tremendous untapped potential that exists in the South American leagues, where Edu has a connection, and where Arsenal have always had trouble getting into.

Before Edu even took over, he delivered Gabriel Martinelli to our doorstep, still the only official signing of the summer, and now, with no more signings being reported and those that are being linked having nothing to do with Edu, we see Edu’s hand again.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

This time, it’s Everton Soares, the 23-year-old winger who stole the show at the Copa America and helped drive Brazil to the trophy.

Soares was already covered in depth by Danny Cannon here at Pain in the Arsenal, and those that saw him play have to admit that it looks like one hell of an approach. It reminds me of Lucas Torreira showcasing at the 2018 World Cup and suddenly everyone loved him.

It’s nice to have that Edu connection, because it provides something like Arsene Wenger used to provide for French players (for better or worse).

But I want to know what else Edu has. We see that he has this Brazilian connection, and that will prove incredibly valuable, but what can he bring us in the way of other necessary signings, and will it even happen this summer?

That’s my concern. It’s still early, so I’m not over here bashing him, I just want to see what’s next. That’s all.
