Arsenal: Forget everything, we have four wingers already
By Josh Sippie
Arsenal continue to peck away at a potential winger signing, but if they look internally, they already have four wingers that we should feel pretty good about.
Not that long ago, I wrote about how Arsenal should spend all their money on defense and let youth figure out the wings. I’m going to re-up on that assertion after having seen the preseason match against Colorado, though not solely because of that match, because there is more to life than preseason friendlies.
But all things considered, we have four guys who continue to beef up their resume and their claim to fame and, conveniently enough, these four guys all happen to play the complete spattering of positions.
First, you have the obvious one in Reiss Nelson, who can’t stop talking about how much he grew at Hoffenheim, and nearly made the first team last year, so it only makes sense that he would be an obvious solution this year. He plays primarily as a right winger.
Then you have Gabriel Martinelli, who carries with him the approval of so many and who showcased all the things we’d want to see. And, despite being only 18 years old, Matteo Guendouzi showed us the power of teen spirit last year. He plays primarily as a left winger, but can also shift right.

Then you have Bukayo Saka, arguably the most talented, but definitely the most raw. Just 17, he plays on the left, showcases tremendous speed and ability on the ball, and with the right fine-tuning, could turn out to be something incredibly special.
And then you have Emile Smith Rowe, perhaps the most exciting of all, who can play all across the creative attacking midfield and who RB Leipzig really wanted back for the year.
Four guys, all in their teens, all breaching first team capabilities, and all just in need of that opportunity. I tell you, I may have been gung-ho on getting one good winger, but if we just need to fill two positions and we have four young guys ready to do it, what’s the drawback of some good old-fashioned internal competition? Maybe it doesn’t always work ideally, but the growth will be worth it in the long haul.
Of course, we still have to figure out the No. 10 role, but that is a different conversation. We need wingers, and we have wingers. Now we just have to have faith in the resources that we have.
