Arsenal and Xavier Amaechi: This isn’t what we meant by ‘sales’
By Josh Sippie
Arsenal are gearing up to sell Xavier Amaechi for super cheap. We’ve been clamoring for sales, but it’s safe to say this is not what we meant.
Arsenal have yet to make a significant sale this summer, and that remains there biggest unchecked box on their to-do list. Frankly, I don’t know how they haven’t. But now we are supposedly nearing our first sale… Xavier Amaechi.
Maybe not selling anyone of note is a byproduct of Edu needing to settle in at the squad and see who he can and can’t make something out of, or maybe it’s just a matter of not getting any significant offers worth exploring. Who knows.
But now Amaechi is out the door, something we’ve seen coming since he was originally upset by the Europa League snub, and not even being considered for the United States tour sealed the deal. It was only a matter of time.
Naturally, we aren’t getting anything in return. The rumored fee is said to be £2.2m, which is a paltry sum.

Hamburg look to be the destination, which is exciting for Amaechi, because young English talents have a tendency to thrive in the Bundesliga, but it should also be nerve-wracking for us fans, because young English talents have a tendency to thrive in the Bundesliga.
Jadon Sancho did it, but Serge Gnabry did it just as well, and what did we get for Gnabry? £5m. Of course, Sancho didn’t go for much more when Borussia Dortmund signed him. It’s not like we should be maligning the fee, but rather maligning the missed opportunity. Because unlike someone like Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Amaechi has a bright future of untapped potential, and I’d rather see us investing in his high ceiling than Mkhitaryan’s unknown end product.
What this will amount to is seeing Amaechi rise and become a star in the Bundesliga. Just like those that went before him. And we will be left wondering why we got so little for him, and the simple answer to that is that we just never gave him a chance. So he was never able to drum up his value.
The deal isn’t done yet, but his continued exclusion, despite his strong showings in the youth set-up, are all we need to understand that it’s just a matter of time before he leaves the club. He’s smart to look at the Bundesliga. He will succeed there.
