Arsenal: Dani Ceballos has one objective this season
By Josh Sippie
Arsenal are sneakily putting together a damn fine transfer window, with Dani Ceballos being a standout signing. Easy enough for him, he has just one task this year.
With all the Nicolas Pepe news and rumors, Arsenal fans may be glossing over the excitement surrounding the arrival of Dani Ceballos, the loanee from Real Madrid who, if everything goes right, would ideally be open to joining the Emirates permanently.
Many are already comparing him to Santi Cazorla after just 20 minutes played for the club as a substitute against Lyon. He displayed so much talent in the U21 Euros as Spain’s stalwart No. 10, with creativity, drive and determination all balled up into one.
It’s exciting to have him joining up at the Emirates, and one of the most exciting things is his versatility, as he can play deeper, like Cazorla did, or up in the No. 10 role, where currently no one can keep hold of the role.
Frankly, there’s only one main objective that should be on the plate of Dani Ceballos. If he completes this one objective, he has done everything he could ever need to do for us.

He needs to keep Mesut Ozil on the bench.
That sounds much worse than it seems. I’m not saying that Ozil doesn’t deserve a chance to get out there and strut his stuff, hopefully work with an invigorated attack and get back to his best. But Ceballos is here explicitly because Ozil hasn’t been able to do that. Same as Denis Suarez. The difference is that Suarez got hurt.
Ceballos is assumedly going to step into that No. 10 role, since that is the role he dominated in the U21s and that is the role that needs the most help, and if he can keep Ozil from featuring, he has done his part to help the team move forward while also, hopefully, spurring a reaction out of Ozil, who has been devoid of any sense of urgency in the five or so years he’s been with us.
If Ozil can’t be sold, which apparently he can’t, the next best thing is to try to evoke a reaction, but without the proper competition, that is never going to happen. Ceballos is proper competition, and younger competition.
Thankfully, we should have a lot of confidence in this happening, as Ceballos is massively talented and has a ton of resources to work with. Exciting times ahead.
