It wasn’t that long ago that Josh Kroenke said that Arsenal won’t compete for top trophies, but was he a bit premature in that assessment?

About a month ago, it was clear that Arsenal were in for a rough season. They didn’t have money, they weren’t signing anybody, and the #WeCareDoYou movement was reaching annoying level of commitment.

In response, Josh Kroenke spoke out about his love for the club, and leveled with the fans, saying that we aren’t going to be competing for “top trophies” this season. It was nice to hear his honesty, but obviously discouraging.

Since that time, Arsenal have signed the next Santi Cazorla in Dani Ceballos and they have all but announced the arrival of Nicolas Pepe, a club record transfer, who will make this attack so much more fearsome than it already was.

With Kieran Tierney up next and the club also now taking finding a centerback seriously, all of the major issues have been identified and are en route to being fixed.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

Obviously the most amazing thing, though, is this attack, which has so much speed and firepower that it’s insane. Each and every one of our front three has the ability to score consistently high numbers of goals, and going behind that, Mesut Ozil may find new life with so many weapons and Dani Ceballos is set to pop onto the big stage.

There is so much to be excited about here that I wonder if Kroenke didn’t speak a little too soon. Or maybe he was just lowering the bar for what was to come.

Obviously the Premier League title is still a bit of a stretch. But there are more “top trophies” than that, otherwise it wouldn’t have been plural.

With an attack like this team is now boasting, it’s not at all unreasonable to think that we can win the Europa League, which we made the final of last year. It’s not unreasonable to talk about a return to winning the FA Cup. Seriously, when you have an attack that is this potent, you have to start allowing certain concessions. There is tremendous potential in this club, if everything clicks, and if the rest of the transfer window plays out like it’s looking, to do something not even Kroenke expects us to do.

Which I guess beats the opposite, of having massive expectations that we never meet. Stranger things have happened.
