Arsenal: Don’t let the Mesut Ozil dream get in the way of practicality
By Josh Sippie
Right at the last minute, DC United have swooped in with interest for Mesut Ozil and Arsenal can’t let this dream of a renaissance get in the way of practicality.
Arsenal fans are starting to get all jazzed up over the potential of having Mesut Ozil in the command center with such a plethora of weapons around him. Adding Nicolas Pepe just put more of an impetus around this belief that he isn’t done yet.
Put Dani Ceballos around him and we may be looking at Madrid-style Ozil coming out to play on more than one occasion, if everybody can find their best feet on a weekly basis.
But here come DC United, fresh off losing Wayne Rooney, and they’re looking for help. How they’re going to pay for Mesut Ozil, I don’t know, but hey, I won’t ask questions. Apparently there is an actual discussion going on to see Ozil shipped off to the States right at the last minute before the season starts.
However, so many fans were already getting back on the hype train, as mentioned. They want to believe that Ozil can find his best, despite putting together about six months of successful time in his five years at the club.

All because he has more weapons.
I don’t buy it though. All summer we wanted him to be sold, but now that we’ve added Pepe, something changes? When we got Alexandre Lacazette, things were supposed to change. They didn’t.
When we got Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, things were supposed to change. They didn’t.
If we had even seen slight improvements, I’d be more keen to believe this dream of a renaissance of Mesut Ozil, but if anything, he’s gotten worse. Last year was his worst year ever at the club, despite our attack carrying us to what little success we found.
So now that DC United have come in with interest, we have to put aside the dreams of an Ozil resurgence and focus on the practical side of things—a sale. It’s what we’ve wanted all along. Nothing is going to change. I hate to be such a naysayer, but blond hair and a new winger is not going to change anything.
Again, I love being proven wrong. But I’ve been drinking the Ozil Kool-aid for so long and I’ve yet to find the nutritional value. It’s all sugar rushes that leave me in worse shape than I was before.
