Full-Backs

Emery seems committed to a back-four-based system. As he stated in the summer, the back three, while useful and nice to have in his pocket if he needs it, is not as consistently effective as the four-man counterpart. And Emery, it seems clear, would like to stick with a back four for the majority of the season.

With Hector Bellerin still out injured, presently expected to return in October, Ainsley Maitland-Niles, who was excellent last week, will continue at right-back, a position that he is starting to come to terms after playing at the wing-back version last season.

On the opposite side, Nacho Monreal should continue to start. Safety concerns continue to cast Sead Kolasinac’s availability, but even if he was an option, Emery may still prefer the more natural left-back, Monreal.
