Central Midfield

With Unai Emery likely to rotate heavily for the early Europa League matches, it is extremely difficult to see which players are nailed on to start. Unlike in the Premier League, in which five or six players almost name themselves whenever they are fit, the Europa League equivalent is substantially murkier.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

Nevertheless, if there is one name that is sure to start on Thursday night, it is Joe Willock. The Europa League group-stage matches were made for players like Willock, a 20-year-old on the fringes of the starting XI but not quite consistent and dependable enough to start on a weekly basis.

No matter the system, Willock will start. The more complicated picture is who plays alongside him. The more pertinent question, in reality, is who starts in the Premier League, because whoever does not will likely feature on Thursday.

With that in mind, I expect to see Lucas Torreira to play against Frankfurt. Granit Xhaka is Unai Emery’s number one central midfielder at present, sadly, while Dani Ceballos and Matteo Guendouzi also seem likely to start in the Premier League. That leaves Torreira on the outside, and thereby featuring in the Europa League instead.
