Arsenal: Calum Chambers creating a problem that he’s also the solution to
By Josh Sippie
Calum Chambers may have crossed into must-start territory at Arsenal, but he’s blocking another must-start at rightback. Which is a problem he alone can solve.
These past few weeks, Calum Chambers has been reconfirming what we should have already known—that he should never have been benched after Arsenal‘s opening week win over Newcastle. We all knew that, but apparently Unai Emery didn’t.
Now that he has been forced into action at rightback and taken home man of the match nearly every single time he plays, he has created another problem. That problem being that you really can’t sit the guy, yet we all really want to see Hector Bellerin added back to the starting XI as well.
Yes, it’s a problem that we love to have. But it’s still a problem nonetheless, and the only solution is… more Calum Chambers.
Just not at rightback.
Seeing as how he is a must-start, and I really do believe that he is at this point, the priority has to be finding him a place to play. And that should be a lot easier than it’s probably going to end up being.

With Rob Holding undoubtedly getting back into the starting XI over Sokratis, the question is whether or not Unai Emery wants to double his money on replacing David Luiz with Claum Chambers as well. I see the argument for each case, but given Emery’s track record and the long-term future he is building towards, Chambers should be given priority like he wasn’t earlier in the season, despite earning it.
It’s not a usual problem. A guy has to start, but there’s another guy behind him that has to start too (Bellerin), so the best of both worlds is to sit the guy who doesn’t have to start (David Luiz) and finally trust Chambers once and for all. Sound easy enough, right?
But it probably won’t be. I can see this being a problem that lingers all year, having to flip between Chambers and Bellerin at rightback while still trusting Luiz at centerback to the point that he starts to feel like he’s going to start every single match. When he really doesn’t need to.
Let the problem that evolves be its own solution. Calum Chambers has proven himself mature and capable, his experience has turned him into a veteran. This doesn’t need to be any more complicated than it already is. Start the man. No matter what.
