Arsenal have a decision to make in the back line going into the match against Sheffield United, but do they really? The answer is obvious.

The chemistry of centerbacks is such a vital piece to any club’s puzzle, and Arsenal really haven’t had it since Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker were together. Those two were perfect for each other, and since then, the club has mashed together ill-matched defenders in the hopes of striking a similar partnership.

It’s never worked. And the current one is the worst of all. David Luiz and Sokratis are both terrible when it comes to self-containment, they have little presence of mind in their defending, and they go where their momentum takes them.

That’s a problem. Not to mention they have very little chemistry to boot. There’s just nothing that suggests they are improving as a pair either. That’s the thing, you don’t just want “a” centerback. You want a pair.

That’s why, rather than stick Rob Holding with David Luiz, you finally pull the trigger and put him with Calum Chambers. Because right from the start you have a built-in chemistry.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

Even ignoring the fact that they have both grown leaps and bounds over the years and begun to truly grown into their element as Premier League caliber defenders. There’s a reason I keep chirping to have Chambers immediately inserted in to the back line, and it’s not just because I’m sick of this current defense. It’s because their both just so good, so young and, you guessed it, so perfect for each other as a tandem.

You can find it in the news quite often, or in Arsenal videos. Holding and Chambers are best friends. They’re like Lacazette and Aubameyang, only less star-studded (at least for now). The chemistry is already there, and since we’re on the subject of building a centerback team, not just piecing together two individuals, you can’t do much better than having two centerbacks who like each other as much as Chambers and Holding do.

Emery has to see this. He has to understand it. Maybe Luiz and Holding can hit it off, but at the end of the day, you are not going to have better chemistry in a centerback pairing than what the two Englishmen will have. So just do it.
