Arsenal need something to change for the long-term, and while it may seem counterintuitive, selling Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang may do it.

There are a lot of things not working too well at Arsenal right now. Listing everything would take up the entire article, so I won’t waste my time, but I will highlight a few—this attack needs help and we need some funds to do it. And no, I don’t think that the answer is for Kroenke to s*** money into the bank for us.

Being a self-sustaining club isn’t such a bad business model. It’s something Liverpool have done quite well with, wouldn’t you say?

The problem with this attack is we have a lot of specialists. Mesut Ozil does one thing well. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang does one thing well. These are guys eating up most of the wage structure and they do essentially one thing. Auba scores. Ozil creates. But jar them off of that primary objective and they become a bit of a chore to keep on the pitch.

And sure, there is an inherent value to having a guy that competes for the Golden Boot every year, but Aubameyang is right about at the peak of his value. He isn’t going to get any better. Meaning that if we don’t sell him as soon as we can, we’re going to be in another Ozil situation, clinging to hope that an overpaid, past his prime superstar can find some kind of form.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to deal with that. We’d be lucky to get anything for Ozil these days, which is honestly why he’s still here.

Aubameyang though, if he can really get us £70m, would be a game-changer. Think of the defensive help we could get. Think of the midfield help, the anything help. We could get with that sum of money. If you want Dayot Upamecano to pair with William Saliba, we can afford that with change. If you want a midfielder to replace whoever it is that leaves, we can afford that.

Without selling Aubameyang, we don’t have a lot of cash grabbers. That’s just where we are. And for as good as Aubameyang is at scoring goals, there will always be more. We’re known for team goals anyway, remember?

Don’t pretend like Alexandre Lacazette can’t score a good chunk of goals either. With the right supporting cast, he’s the starter we need.
