1. Do we need to buy a defender?

This defense is just a fountain of unanswered questions, most of which involve hindsight, which I’m not in then game for right now. What we first need to do is take inventory of what we have at the club.

David Luiz and Sokratis are the veterans. They are the venerable old guys meant to tide us over until the next era of this defense. Then you have the misfit, Shkodran Mustafi, who really needs to be sold. Then you have the exciting names—Calum Chambers, Rob Holding and William Saliba. And lastly, the question mark, Konstantinos Mavropanos.

So, do we need to buy a defender?

Answer

Yes. Absolutely. Even if Chambers hadn’t gotten hurt (which I’m still upset about), we still would have needed another young defender. Ideally, I would want to start next season without Luiz, Sokratis or Mustafi on the team.

Like I said, Ideally. If I have to give in, I’ll take Luiz for another year, but I’d rather not.

That would give us Chambers, Holding and Saliba. I want to see another new defender this January and, if my ideal situation comes true, another top-tier one in the summer. This is magnified by the fact that Chambers is hurt.

But you still don’t want to block him, and that’s why I say you wait until summer for that second guy, just to see how his recovery is going. But 100% buy one centerback now.
