Arsenal: January silence could lead to summer shouts
By Josh Sippie
Arsenal’s January transfer window is passing by rather quietly, but whatever we don’t do now will be magnified by what we do do in the summer.
I get that a lot of Arsenal fans have big hopes for this transfer window. What with the need for defensive help and the new manager in charge, it would make sense that we’d want to see immediate changes.
But there’s a benefit to being silent this January, and it wouldn’t surprise me if Arteta is astute enough to honor that silence.
This period of Arteta’s reign is like the preseason for his actual beginning. He’s making significant changes with the crop we already have at the club. And make no mistake about it, it’s a talented crop. Very talented. So there is enough skill there that we can remain competitive just with what we have.
My last reservation was David Luiz and Sokratis, but they’ve proven surprisingly capable under the new manager.

Plus, it’s widely known that it’s not always easy to find what you’re looking for in the January transfer window. Arsenal are mid-table, they aren’t doing well, so attracting top-tier players is not going to be an easy feat.
However, with it being seen around the world how capable Arteta is as a manager and what this could mean for the future of the Gunners, this summer, with a fresh start, would be the perfect time to start wrangling in players who believe in where this club is headed. As well as cutting out those few players who don’t.
It’s not like if we go through this January window without a significant signing, that it means Arteta doesn’t care. Of course he does. It just means we’re biding our time for real solution, not immediate fixes that probably won’t fix anything immediately. Plus, again, we need to assess what viable resources we have in house before we go spending precious funds on players we may not need.
For instance, we still have William Saliba coming. We have Dani Ceballos to continue evaluating. We have a lot of stuff to look at and assess before we go spending money on severely limited player availability this transfer window.
And just keep in mind that whatever we don’t buy now, if we really do need it, we will buy in the summer. There’s no doubt about that. I’d rather get real solutions in the summer than quick-fix attempts now.
