Arsenal: 3 biggest disappointments of the season thus far
By Josh Sippie
Arsenal’s season has been populated by highs and lows, and the same is true of the players. Here are the three guys who have disappointed the most.
Being the optimist that I am, I never like to go too far into negative town, but seeing as how I’ve spent a lot of time talking about biggest surprises, and biggest influences of the season thus far, it’s important to balance it out. It’s time now to talk about the biggest Arsenal disappointments of the season.
These are guys who either failed to live up to expectations, failed to live up to what they established last year, or just failed in some way. Needless to say we’ve had a lot of failures this year, as we sit in the middle of the table.
Even with the optimism that better times are ahead, there are always going to be disappointments. Not all of these disappointments should be met with huge outcries though. Some should be met with patience.
For instance, let’s take a trip to Bummerville at No. 3.
3. Matteo Guendouzi
This has moreso become a disappointment lately, and I think another problem here is just that he did so much last year and got our hopes up so high and he just hasn’t been able to follow last year up with the season we needed. He isn’t proving to be the pivot midfielder we need, hence Dani Ceballos, and it remains to be seen how he can supplant Granit Xhaka, since that’s his best hope of getting into the starting XI consistently.
Since Mikel Arteta has taken over, he’s been on the outs, not to mention the fallout they had in training. He did return to the team soon after, however, and I hope that this disappointment can skew more towards the positive by the end of the season.
That’s the thing. I’m saying this in February. There is still plenty of time for him to turn my assessment around and get back into the thick of it.
No reason to be concerned, just a bit of a bummer.
Moving on to No. 2.
