Arsenal Vs West Ham United: 5 things we learned – Champions League hopes alive
4. Bernd Leno saves bacon
There were a rising number of questions surrounding the value and impact of Bernd Leno in recent weeks. He made a couple of errors, started to lose command of his penalty area, something which was an issue for him during his first season at the club, and also struggled to play confidently and with composure with the ball at his feet.
On this occasion, however, he was excellent, and he saved Arsenal’s bacon on several occasions — that, you may recall, is not the first time he has done that. There was one moment of confusion with David Luiz when he should have communicated clearly and collected a loose ball, and his play in possession is still problematic, too eager to boot the ball down the field and commit a turnover, but his goalkeeping was superb.
He sprung to thwart Sebastien Haller in the first half, made several superb saves against Michail Antonio, including one reaction sprawl to claw clear a close-range header in the second half, and he commanded his penalty area well from set-pieces, punching clear when under pressure with authority and distance. Leno was at his best here, and if he wasn’t, Arsenal would not have won.
