Arsenal: Arkadiusz Milik the catch-all option to whatever happens
By Josh Sippie
Arsenal’s striker situation is in a really good place, so links to Napoli striker Arkadiusz Milik could mean a multitude of things, and serves as a catch-all.
Ever since Arkadiusz “Arek” Milik started making headway at Napoli, I’ve wanted him at Arsenal. Sure, the parallel to Robert Lewandowski helped, but as we’ve seen now, even with that hype not being fulfilled, the inherent value of the Polish striker makes sense at the Emirates.
Nowadays, he’s past the prospect stage, he’s pushing his prime at 26-years-old, and he may well be ready for another challenge. He’s never blown the doors off Serie A, but he has had significant strides internationally and overall, while he may seem underwhelming, he’s the exact kind of striker we need, no matter the situation that unfolds.
As of right now, we have no idea what comes next for this club. With the Coronavirus, we don’t even know if the season will play out, let alone if we will qualify for the Champions League. But assuming that we do play the rest of the season, one of two things is going to happen. We either reach the Champions League or we don’t.
If we don’t, we probably lose at least one of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette. Whichever we lose, replace with Milik.

What makes Milik great is he has the strength and hold-up play that we’ve missed in Olivier Giroud but still retained semblances of in Lacazette. But he also has enough experience playing off speedy options like Dries Mertens that if we do retain one of those two strikers, MIlik fits right in.
It also has implications on Eddie Nketiah. Right now, Nketiah is the swing vote. If he’s good enough, we shouldn’t need to buy another striker. And from my vantage, he has been good enough. I’m just eager to see more of him.
If we lose both Lacazette and Aubameyang and replace them both with Milik and Nketiah, guess who’s satisfied? I am. There you’ve got a dynamic combination of youth, experience, speed, and strength. I can already hear the complaints, but the tools are all there.
But what if Nketiah is the problem? What if he doesn’t pan out the way Arteta is hoping?
Arek Milik. Easy.
Even if we keep both Lacazette and Aubameyang and just need a third striker, choose Milik. Someone who is competitive enough to match Lacazette’s level while providing an alternative means of attack.
No matter what we need at striker this summer, Milik is the answer. Even if we need nothing… Milik? Please?
