Arsenal: 3 players to sell now or invest in
1. Alexandre Lacazette/Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang
Ever since Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang arrived at the club a little over two years ago, he and Alexandre Lacazette have been Arsenal’s saviours. But while one is the reigning Player of the Season and the other is the reigning top goalscorer and is set to emulate that feat this season, Arsenal should consider selling one if not both this summer.
Aubameyang will be 31 and have one year remaining on his contract. If he is unwilling to extend his deal for whatever reason, he should be sold for the maximum price possible, whatever that may be. Letting him enter the final year of his deal is a criminal mistake, as Arsenal have experienced in the past, and the potential £50 million that he could fetch would be invaluable to reinvest in the squad.
A similar argument can also be made for Lacazette. He will turn 29 at the end of the season. He will have two years remaining on his contract but has also seemed hesitant to sign a new deal. Should he reject any offers of an extension, Arsenal should sell for the maximum price. Between the two, they could raise nearly £100 million which can be reinvested in a new, younger striker and winger.
It is time for Arsenal to act financially prudently in the transfer market. And that means either investing in the players that they are going to build their future around or selling them while their value remains high. That logic applies to all four candidates here.
