Arsenal: 3 reasons that Willian is absolutely not necessary
By Josh Sippie
Arsenal are rumored to be hunting for Willian, who won’t sign a new deal with Chelsea, but here are three reasons why we absolutely don’t need him.
I love smart transfers. I love when Arsenal go out and solve a problem for fractions of what other clubs dump money on. It makes me feel smarter because my club is exactly that. So when WIllian popped up as a potential free transfer, I was initially on board.
It works just like David Luiz, right? We get an older, proven veteran who can help us at a position of need. Luiz has been a fantastic fill-in this year, and Willian would do much of the same. He’s always been a pest when we played against him, so why not onboard him as our very own pest?
Willian has been performing consistently at the Premier League level for over half a decade. He’s won things, he’s scored goals, created assists, tormented defenses. He’s been an asset to that Chelsea outfit and he’s also somehow managed to remain remarkably underrated.
So yeah, in the effort of saving money and still landing quality options, Willian makes a lot of sense. Only he doesn’t.
The more I thought about it, the more I realized that Willian actually isn’t necessary for the current state of our football club. Here are three reasons why.
3. No more scraps needed
As I said, I love me a good bargain. Always have, always will. Willian is a bargain. To get someone of his quality for free seems like a no brainer, but here’s my point at No. 3—we don’t need to be picking at scraps anymore.
It worked with David Luiz. It kind of but not really worked with Petr Cech. At a certain point, it gets a bit annoying, always plucking up the players that our rivals discard. Maybe that’s uppity of me, but in my humble opinion, Arsenal can do better than this now. We’re wanting to be back in the top six, right? Then we should be prepared to do so. More on this at No. 2, so let’s get to it.
