Isolating the Premier League table since Mikel Arteta took over Arsenal, we see a clear narrative. Here are three takeaways from the modified table.

I’m usually not big on modified Premier League tables. When SkySports threw up (literally, vomited) a modified table that showed where Arsenal would be without Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, I threw up (literally, vomited).

But if we change the Premier League table to only show results since December 26th, Mikel Arteta‘s first match in charge, we see some useful takeaways. Now, it must be said that Arteta was technically in charge against Everton, but he was in the stands. Freddie Ljungberg was still in charge. That’s why I opted for Boxing Day, starting with that 1-1 draw against Bournemouth.

My purpose in doing this is to show how incredible Mikel Arteta has been, and how anyone whining about the “current state” of the club has no idea what they’re talking about. The current state is Arteta, not what Unai Emery and Freddie Ljungberg did beforehand.

Here’s a quick glance at the top half of the table:

  1. Liverpool, 33 points from 12 played, +17 GD
  2. Manchester United, 20 pts from 11 played, +10 GD
  3. Manchester City, 19 points from 10 played, +7GD
  4. Everton, 18 points from 11 played, +0GD
  5. Arsenal, 17 points from 10 played, +7GD
  6. Chelsea, 16 points from 11 played, +4GD
  7. Wolverhampton, 16 pts from 11 played, +3GD
  8. Southampton, 16 pts from 11 played, -1 GD
  9. Crystal Palace, 16 pts from 11 played, -1 GD
  10. Watford, 15 points from 11 played, +4 GD
  11. Tottenham, 15 points from 11 played, +1GD

Now here are three takeaways from that table, starting with No. 3.

3. Back where we belong

In that table, Arsenal are in striking distance of second place. With the right results, we can use that game in hand to bypass Everton and go level on points with Manchester United, with just a +3 goal differential needed to match them.

Also known as, since Mikel Arteta took over, we are within striking distance of the Champions League. That’s what we’re all here for, right? We’re here to get back into the Champions League and Mikel Arteta has already achieved that end. The only problem is he has the baggage of Emery and Ljungberg to contend with.

Moving on to No. 2.
