2. Arsene Wenger persists with back three

As the 2016/17 season drew towards its closing stages, Arsenal were in freefall. The team was in disarray, the performances had fallen off a cliff, and the club was on the edge. In such a time of crisis, Arsene Wenger made quite the decision: use a back three.

It was viewed as a temporary solution for an immediate problem. A stop-gap just to change something, anything. But as the preseason has illustrated, and now as the competitive season gets underway, it is clear that Wenger intends to use the back three over a more extended period of time.

Whether it is the right system to play or not, it is difficult to say. Hector Bellerin and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain were bright in the wing-back roles, but the central midfield was a problem and the spaces in the defensive wide channels allowed Leicester to bombard the Arsenal box with crosses. Nevertheless, Wenger ostensibly believes in the back three. We will see if that is the right call or not.
