Arsenal: Best starting XI when everyone is fit
Centre-Backs
Arsenal have a whole host of centre-backs that they could use. None of them are especially convincing, and in reality, there is very little between the entire range of options. They are all equally as flawed. However, the best pairing when all players are fit is David Luiz and Calum Chambers.
Luiz is the most experienced defender in the entire squad. He is a leader on and off the pitch. He is also excellent in possession and produces enough inspirational displays to make up for his mind-numbing errors. His inconsistencies are frustrating, but he provides enough positive moments to be a net-plus value to the team.
Choosing his partner was more difficult. Pablo Mari has looked capable, though has only played two games for the club, Shkodran Mustafi looks revitalised under Mikel Arteta but has a littered history of disastrous performances, while Rob Holding and Sokratis are also potential options.
In the end, I chose Chambers. Chambers was excellent shortly before tearing his ACL. He looks strong and able defensively, flourished in possession once again, is addressing his lax positional sense, and has produced his best performances at centre-back. Chambers often gets a bad rep because of his poor displays at right-back. But as a centre-half, he is a capable option.
