1. Centre-Back

Arsenal have more centre-backs than any other position. Including those presently on loan at other clubs and on the sidelines through injury, the club has eight to choose from ahead of next season. And yet, of those eight, only one can be considered a potential starting solution and he is 19 with no experience having played in the Premier League.

The centre-back group, then, is full of decent reserves who would be perfectly adequate as a third, fourth or even fifth-choice option but cannot be trusted as starters throughout the season. And so, while numbers are not so necessary, elite quality is.

An elite centre-back is not easy to find and Arsenal may have to spend lavishly to secure one, with RB Leipzig’s Dayot Upamecano the most talked about target at present. But that is what this team desperately needs, and has done for 15 years.

Arteta has shown that he can improve the defence through smart coaching and more defined tactics. But in his high-press approach, the centre-backs have difficult jobs. And therefore, is time Arsenal signed one that is capable of fulfilling the role at the highest possible level.
