Alexandre Lacazette is being linked with a move to Atletico Madrid. Here are three reasons why Arsenal could benefit from moving him on.

Alexandre Lacazette has been one of Arsenal’s most crucial and positively impactful players in recent seasons. But the Frenchman has struggled in his third year, failing to live up to his Player of the Season standard, and now faces a summer of uncertainty regarding his future. And he is now being linked with an exit to Atletico Madrid, who pursued him when the Gunners first signed him and are on the lookout for a new centre-forward.

3. The potential of youth

Prior to the coronavirus-enforced postponement of all sport in the United Kingdom, Mikel Arteta had actually dropped Lacazette from the starting XI. While it was largely assumed that Lacazette was still the number one option and would reclaim his starting role, 20-year-old Eddie Nketiah started three of the last three league matches before the suspension, scoring once.

Arteta has highly praised the young striker and sees him as a potential starting option in the future, even if he is a little raw and untamed at present. Nketiah is joined by the equally outrageous Gabriel Martinelli, who has struggled for playing time behind Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang on the left flank under Arteta.

Martinelli might be better suited in a central role, which would be available to him should Lacazette be shipped out. Relying on the pair would be a risky move, of course, but Arsenal have an unprecedented crop of young players that are raring and ready to play. Why not lean into them?
