Arsenal: There’s only one winger worth talking about these days
By Josh Sippie
With Arsenal’s sudden link to Ryan Fraser, it’s kicked up what used to be the winger circus of transfer rumors. But there’s only one winger we should talk about.
It wasn’t that long ago that we spent every summer begging for Arsenal to sign a winger. Anybody. Anybody who had shown any ability to score a goal or, for the zesty folks out there too, create a goal or two as well.
These days, we don’t need a winger. We have Nicolas Pepe, Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli, and Reiss Nelson. They are all incredible options and we should be excited about all of them. Honestly, I wouldn’t replace a single one.
We have two on the right—Pepe, and Nelson. We have two on the left—Saka, and Martinelli. I can’t think of a better set-up than that. Yet here come rumors of Ryan Fraser and my big takeaway from that is… well, he’s free?
We really don’t need to talk about any wingers, and we shouldn’t need to for quite some time. Of course, dealing with absolutes is never a good idea when Arsenal are concerned because there is always a caveat. There is always an exception to the rule.

That exception is Serge Gnabry. There is no winger worth talking about. Don’t tell me about Jadon Sancho or Kingsley Coman or whoever the hell is the next hot sensation. I don’t care. I honestly would rather our winger crop than Sancho. Does that make me crazy? Sure. Of course it does.
But Gnabry? I would part seas to get Gnabry back to Arsenal. And it’s not just from a sentimental standpoint, though that certainly factors into it. I’m talking about a practical standpoint. Gnabry is the best winger in the world right now. Don’t tell me otherwise. He’s got 17 goals and ten assists in about 2000 minutes across all competitions.
Statistically less than Sancho, but Gnabry is also a Gooner through and through. And that’s one of the biggest reasons why we want him back. Because that production would blossom even higher when he’s back in the kit that he’s wearing during the shutdown. I would take Gnabry over any winger we currently have. Sorry, not sorry.
If you’re talking about wingers we should be going after, the conversation doesn’t have to go long. Say Serge Gnabry and the conversation is over. Which is also a testament to how good of a situation we’re in.
