6. Carlos Soler

The longest-tenured member of this list, Carlos Soler primarily appears because of the rumored price tag attached to him. For £36m—the same fee we could pay for Dani Ceballos—we can get a guy who is overhyped as the next Santi Cazorla without having any grounds to stand on with that claim. Especially not statistically.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

I don’t think that Soler is a bad idea overall. I think he’s a very talented young midfielder who could prove to be an excellent pivot. In fact, I’d even go so far as to say I’d love to have him on the team. But for much less than what Valencia is going to be willing to accept. Maybe £20-25m or so. He’s 23, so he’s definitely one for the future.

For the amount of money they’re asking for, Arsenal can cover the majority of Thomas Partey‘s price tag. I don’t think you’ll find many people arguing that we need Soler more than we need Partey. Partey is a clear and obvious solution while Soler is a leap. And a leap we just don’t need to take without other clear and obvious solutions coming alongside him.

For that reason, he’s a bad idea. A good signing, depending on the circumstances, but a bad idea given the circumstances being reported.

Next up, No. 5.
