1. Jerome Boateng

It used to be that every summer I went to bat pitching Jerome Boateng as a fantastic solution. Our defense was in shambles and we could use a seasoned, elite defender like the German monster. But while Jerome Boateng is still exactly that, Arsenal’s defensive situation has changed drastically. The role that I once wanted to be filled by Boateng is now filled by David Luiz and with one year left on Luiz’s deal, the idea is that he can see us through into the next era of this defense.

The era that will be anchored by William Saliba, Calum Chambers, and oh, I don’t know, Tah or Upamecano. Those are the kinds of defenders you want to build around for the long-term, not Jerome Boateng, who already has injury problems which tend to worsen with age.

The only thing that would make Boateng a good idea is if we lose Luiz and Sokratis in the same window. But we know that isn’t happening. We know that Luiz is here and he is determined to make a difference and after Arteta took over, his work on the pitch has improved exponentially.

Boateng could do what Luiz is doing, but he doesn’t need to, because Luiz is already doing it. The end.
