1. The returnees

The biggest defensive signing that Arsenal will make this summer is three different players, all of which are already with the club, in one way or another. Right across the backline, the team has been caught short without £50 million worth of left-backs and centre-backs and a right-back who is still not fit.

William Saliba will be the new boy. The Frenchman returns from his loan spell with Saint-Etienne and is slated to start from the off. He is highly regarded, hugely talented, and while very raw at just 19 and limited first-team experience, a potentially massive improvement over the present options.

Meanwhile, both full-back positions will receive a huge boost. Kieran Tierney has played just 743 minutes in all competitions this season, while Hector Bellerin is still not fully fit after recovering from an ACL tear last year. He has played through a groin injury of late. Having both back at full fitness and match-sharpness will revolutionise the full-back positions.

With these three ‘signings’, then, suddenly Arsenal have an entirely new backline and defensive midfielder. Throw in the developments that Mikel Arteta has already made and you have the makings of stark improvement next season.
