Arsenal: Predicting the future of every loan player
William Saliba
Included in Arsenal’s £26 million acquisition of William Saliba last summer was a year-long loan return to Saint-Etienne to ensure that he would receive regular first-team football throughout the season. Saliba was reportedly the driving force of this clause. He was concerned about falling down the pecking order in north London and wanted to protect his development.
The Frenchman has struggled with injuries this season, suffering a hamstring injury at the start of the year and then a metatarsal fracture in late November. He has only played 17 games in all competitions as a result. However, when fit, Saliba has been an assured starter for the Ligue 1 club and performed well.
He was superb in a 1-0 victory over Monaco in the Coupe de France and has substantially improved St. Etienne’s defence when featured. Only 19, it remains to be seen what role he will play when he arrives at the Emirates next season, but Saliba was signed because Arsenal believe he is special and will be the solution of their defence. That all begins with Saliba becoming the starter. He will start next season and his future will be defined by his performances from that point on.
