Shkodran Mustafi

Unlike both Sokratis and Torreira, Shkodran Mustafi’s trajectory under Arteta has been the complete opposite. Outcast and unwanted when the Spaniard first took over, the defender was given a chance to start at centre-back amid the mire of injuries at the position and has not looked back, producing one of his best periods of form since he arrived at the club in 2016.

Despite starting five of the last six Premier League games and both crucial Europa League contests against Olympiakos, it is doubtful that Mustafi will ever be the long-term solution to the centre-half position. Arsenal need significant upgrades at central defence, and while Mustafi has improved markedly under Arteta, his error-prone ways persist.

Given that he will never be a long-term starter, Arsenal will likely look to sell this summer. Rob Holding and Calum Chambers offer more upside, while Mustafi’s £90,000-per-week wages are problematic. He also has a year remaining on his contract, one that is unlikely to be renewed. The club will most likely attempt to cash in while they still can.
