Arsenal: The 5 ‘new signings’ Gunners will benefit from next season
2. Kieran Tierney
With Nacho Monreal slowing and settling into a centre-back role and Sead Kolasinac showing serious defensive shortcomings that were consistently exploited by opponents, Arsenal went out and ‘solved’ the left-back position in the summer transfer window, signing Kieran Tierney from Celtic in a £25 million move.
Sadly, Tierney has hardly played. He arrived following a sports hernia operation, missing the first two months of the season. When he was fit, he made just five league appearances before dislocating his shoulder in a 3-1 win over December. He has not played since.
Thanks to the emergence of Bukayo Saka, Arsenal have managed the Tierney absence well. Nevertheless, Saka is a winger who has adapted to the position excellently. There are moments when his inexperience shows. Tierney would offer more balance and defensive security, providing Arsenal will an all-new full-back pairing. Getting and keeping the Scottish international fit will be very much like adding a new signing to the team.
