Arsenal: The 5 ‘new signings’ Gunners will benefit from next season
1. William Saliba
Despite Arsenal’s extensive defensive problems this season, there has always been hope on the horizon. First, Arteta proved that he can strike some sort of tune from the dodgy strings he has been handed. Secondly, Bellerin and Tierney should rediscover their fitness before next season. And finally, and most importantly, a saviour is on the horizon.
Arsenal astutely signed Saint-Etienne centre-back William Saliba last summer and loaned him back to the Ligue 1 side last season. The 19-year-old will return to north London ahead of next season and is expected to slot straight into the centre-back position.
Arteta will be sure not to rush Saliba, of course, but, when fit, the teenager has performed encouragingly in Ligue 1 this season and he offers exhilarating potential, especially when compared to those he will replace.
All in all, Saliba, Bellerin and Tierney would offer Arsenal three ‘new signings’ across the backline. Throw in an improved Pepe and Smith Rowe who offers another option in central midfield and, very quickly, you have a much healthier looking squad indeed.
