Arsenal: 3 reasons why Mesut Ozil staying could be disastrous
2. He could stunt growth
Mikel Arteta is conducting a long-term rebuild at Arsenal. He is looking to assemble a team that can challenge for top-four finishes and titles and trophies in three or four years. He knows that will not be possible next season.

Ozil will not be a part of that project. The same can be said for many of Arsenal’s veteran players, including even Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette. At present, it is more valuable for Arteta to work out what he has in the young talent that might be a part of his long-term plan. And in attacking midfield, he has two extremely intriguing options.
Joe Willock has sat behind Ozil all season. He has not played extensively, especially in the Premier League, but he brings a unique skill set. He is a superb ball-carrier, deceptively athletic and powerful, and has a knack for scoring goals with late runs into the penalty area. His development has already slowed this season as Ozil has started ahead of him.
Then there is Emile Smith Rowe. More akin to Ozil with his subtle movements and spatial awareness, Smith Rowe is currently shining on loan with Huddersfield Town. He has also impressed in brief outings for Arsenal, too. He will turn 20 this summer and he could be the long-term Ozil successor. It is time for him and Willock to be handed more game time, just to see what they are capable of.
