1. Jonathan Tah

Because I refuse to give up on him. Jonathan Tah remains, to me, the best and most game-changing defensive transfer target to be linked to Arsenal. From the moment he was linked years ago, he looked to be the perfect combination of Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny. He has the size of a Mertesacker but the athleticism and physicality of Koscielny.

Tah suits up at Bayer Leverkusen, who are pushing their way up the table slowly but surely and you can’t do that without the control tower on the backline that is Jonathan Tah.

Tah, like Upamecano, won’t come cheap, but the thing that makes Tah more attractive than Upamecano is that Tah has passed the cupcake phase of his early career and proven himself a steady, consistent presence, if not slightly unremarkable solely because he’s settled into such a groove in his individual performance that the only thing he’s lacking is a bit of upward mobility and a bigger and better squad around him.

Maybe Arsenal isn’t in the best state right now, but that will turn back around again, and it can all be built around Tah.
