Konstantinos Mavropanos is rumored to be on the Arsenal chopping block, but here are three reasons he absolutely shouldn’t be.

Arsenal‘s defense is the talk of the town these days, trying to figure out who we can count on next year, who we’re going to sell, and who we still need to secure. Somehow, Konstantinos Mavropanos has been completely uninvolved with any conversation, despite how much he originally impressed Arsene Wenger upon his arrival.

That is, until recently, when murmurs of a sale have kicked up, and I have nothing to do now but question why we would ever want to lose Mavropanos before he can even try to prove what he can become.

And so, we’re going to go through three reasons why we should not sell Mavropanos, because of course we shouldn’t.

Arsenal can still make such good use of Konstantinos Mavropanos, and here are three reasons why

We start with No. 3.

3. We need defenders

Arsenal is in a unique situation where they need defenders, but they can’t spend a lot of money on them. Preferably no money, if possible, but they still need guys to staff the defense—capable guys, maybe with some upside. As it stands, we have William Saliba coming in to join Calum Chambers and David Luiz as the triumvirate of starting possibilities. That’s a pretty solid base to build off of.

We’re probably going to be selling Shkodran Mustafi and Sokratis, and Rob Holding has never been in more doubt than he is right now. He could be sold too. That means that if we don’t get Pablo Mari on a permanent, which we probably are, we will be desperate.

For a club that is going to hope to compete in at least three competitions, that just isn’t enough. Mavropanos may be still on the unproven side, but he’s capable of filling a role and potentially growing into something more. And remember—he doesn’t cost anything to keep.

In this war of attrition, we don’t want Arsenal to be caught with their pants down. Injuries happen, inconsistencies happen. In preparing for the worst, we can’t have too many centerbacks available.

On to No. 2.
