Arsenal: The 5 players that can save the Gunners millions
1. Matteo Guendouzi
Bar centre-back, most would claim that Arsenal’s greatest weakness this season has been central midfield. From the lack of goals from the more offensive-minded players to the limited protection the defence has received, the squad entirely lacks a game-dominating central midfielder. It is why Thomas Partey has been so heavily linked with a move.
What is more concerning that none of the current options even have the ability to become this player. All apart from Matteo Guendouzi. If there is one midfielder in the squad who can fill one of the holding positions at a truly world-class level, it is the hair-raising Frenchman.
He has a superb passing range, is combative in his defensive work, can carry the ball well, is excellent at receiving possession under pressure, and he can entirely dominate games as proven with terrific performances versus Bournemouth, Aston Villa and Spurs this season. He can play at a level that no other midfielder is capable of. The problem? Consistency.
That, though, will come with age, experience, and time. Guendouzi can improve his positional shortcomings and lapses in concentration. And if he does, he might be the best midfielder in the Premier League.
