2. Nico Elvedi

Borussia Monchengladbach are one of the most fashionable teams in Europe. They moved into third position in the standings with their comfortable win over Eintracht Frankfurt and feature hot stars like Dennis Zakaria, Breel Embolo and Marcus Thuram. However, one of the lesser-mentioned Monchengladbach stars could be a potential defensive solution for Arsenal.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

Mathias Ginter has been the lead centre-back at Monchengladbach for many years, but from the start of the 2018/19 season, former full-back Nico Elvedi was switched inside and adapted to a more central role. It is one that he has flourished in.

“I think it was a clever move by the coaching team,” he said this season. “I feel very happy at centre-back, as I have played there in the past too. I think you can see that on the pitch. It’s like the position was made for me. I can see the whole game and can help build up play more effectively.”

A 23-year-old who has played right across the backline, stands at 6-foot-2 and has been compared to John Stones for his elegance on the ball, Elvedi is not as big a name as Upamecano or Jonathan Tah and he has been criticised for some youthful mistakes earlier in the season, but with a year remaining on his contract, he could be a more economically friendly option to consider.
