Arsenal: 3 problems with letting David Luiz walk away
By Josh Sippie
1. Replacing?
If Sokratis leaves, we don’t need to replace him. If Mustafi leaves, more of the same. I had all the confidence in the world going into next year with Luiz, Chambers, Saliba and Mari. That’s a powerful quadruped to bank the defense on, though I wouldn’t mind another name to choose from, just for variety’s sake.
With Luiz leaving, you kind of have to have another name in there, because three defenders is a disaster waiting to happen. But personally, and I know I’m not alone, keeping either Sokratis or Mustafi has next to no appeal. Though the latter would be preferred if I had to pick one.
Meaning that more investment has to be made into this defense, but does that money go towards a veteran? Or does Arteta invest in a younger option like Tah or Disasi? That’s a question that needs answering if Luiz leaves us because if you keep Luiz, you don’t absolutely need anyone else.
If you lose Luiz, you absolutely do need someone else.
