Arsenal: 3 players for whom Charlton friendly was ray of hope
By Mac Johnson
1. Matteo Guendouzi
There have been growing reports circulating that Matteo Guendouzi and Arteta have had a spat, leading some to suggest that he could leave the club in the summer with just two years remaining on his contract. Guendouzi had slipped down the midfield pecking order upon Arteta’s arrival, but here, he started alongside Maitland-Niles.
The Frenchman is arguably Arsenal’s most valuable player, maybe with the exception of Nicolas Pepe. Losing him would be a blow. He certainly has his quirks. His quick temper and independent style of both play and manner may not blend perfectly with the rather cool-headed and methodical Arteta, but there’s no denying his importance and quality.
So seeing him start against Charlton, in his preferred role on the left of a midfield two, and actually function well next to a player who isn’t as adept at controlling tempo as our typical starters — see Granit Xhaka and Dani Ceballos — was extremely encouraging. It’s a ray of hope for the future of this club.
Drawing meaningful conclusions from a behind-closed-doors friendly against Championship opposition is foolish, to say the least, but the inclusions of Nelson, Maitland-Niles and Guendouzi suggest they must be doing something right. And that is very encouraging indeed.
