Arsenal: 3 internal solutions to three midfield openings
By Josh Sippie
1. Joe Willock
I’ve written a lot specifically about Joe Willock and his refusal to be forgotten and there’s another article coming out later today. The Charlton friendly was just another example of him hanging around in the peripherals, reminding the world that he’s still just as talented as he’s always been. If anything, he’s found more of a foundation to his often erratic playing style.
Willock has the benefit of being able to play any central midfield position, which allows him to be an excellent spotter to both Smith Rowe at the No. 10 role and Maitland-Niles in a deeper role. Willock started making headway into that deeper role, but his attacking prowess pushed him into more consideration for the No. 10 role.
But that just serves the internal solution purpose all the better. Three guys spread across two positions with perfect proportions. It’s always dicey to bet on youth, but with how much we’ve seen out of these three particular guys, the diciness is a nonfactor.
